Kids: Abnormal/Normal Expectations

11/09 - 12/06

This course will explore cultural competence from many different perspectives. As a foster/adoptive/relative/residential caregiver you are exposed to many different child/family cultures. You will be working with children and families who are different from you. Whether those differences are ethnic, religious, socioeconomic, etc. we need to establish reasonable expectations for the children in our care. This course seeks to enhance the cultural effectiveness of participants by exploring diversity in individuals, families, and communities. Participants will explore the culture of the family through its structure, behavioral aspects, parenting styles, strengths, and challenges. Participants discuss and further develop the principles needed to effectively work with children and families of different cultural backgrounds than their own and identify resources they can access in the process of becoming increasingly culturally effective.
