Autism Spectrum Disorders

10/26 - 11/22

This course provides participants with a solid understanding of the diverse nature of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) through learning about Autism, Asperger Syndrome (AS), and Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), including brain function, genetics, and environmental influences. Participants will review the most recent diagnostic changes in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 5th Edition (DSM – 5). Participants are provided with information on the diverse tools and approaches used for diagnosing, managing, and treating ASD. With this information, participants can identify danger risks, and discuss ways to effectively approach parenting and advocating for the needs of children and youth with autism. The impact of the autism spectrum on the individual, family, and society are discussed. Community, state, and national resources are explored.
